Serving Like Jesus Served

“Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.”

—John 13:14-15

Jesus set the example of being a servant in everything He did. Even in coming to earth, Jesus was serving. His death was a result of serving others. His whole life modeled the characteristic of service for His followers.

When was the last time you washed someone’s feet? I’m not talking about literally washing someone’s feet; I want to know the last time you put another person’s need ahead of your own. Can you remember a time recently where you denied self in order to serve someone else?

If Jesus is the perfect model of a servant, it would seem only logical that His followers would do the same. Take a quick look at how the believers in the book of Acts behaved. Read Acts 2:44-45. In this passage the believers were sharing and supporting one another and taking care of everyone’s needs.

Why were the New Testament believers serving one another? What motivated them to sell their possessions and give to those in need? Were they responding to some denominational emphasis? Had the apostles just read a best-selling church growth book?

Did an evangelist stir the church to become more loving? Maybe the answer is “the example.” Do you think perhaps it was because the early church took the words of Jesus seriously when He said, “I have set you an example?”

Are you taking seriously the example of service set by Jesus? If you are serving like Jesus served, you are walking as He walked.
